My name is Thom Drinkwater and I am the owner of Selflovefirst CIC. I started the company because I am passionate about mental health and utilising meditation, mindfulness, self-compassion-based practices and nature as a means of alleviating negatives states of mind.

My interest stems from seeking respite from my own experiences of stress, anxiety, depression and addiction.

I am 42 years old now and have studied and practiced meditation and philosophically related texts since i was 15 years old. I have taken inspiration from great teachers such as Jack Kornfield, Sharon Salzburg, Lama Surya Das, Eckhart Tolle, Rupert Spira, Ram Dass, Thich Nat Hanh, Jon Kabat-Zinn and many others. 

I can say without a doubt that, for me, meditation and mindfulness based practices in nature have been a powerful resource of refuge and recovery from negative states of mind.

I believe that meditation reveals the true nature of who we are and with that we are are able to live with ourselves a little more

Outside of my sitting practice I practice mindful awareness and learn to be with the present moment. I find the mundane activity of day to day tasks become a little more interesting and i notice things that I would never have picked up on before. Mindfulness makes the most unbearable tasks more tolerable and appealing and there are no words to describe rich experiences such as a beautiful sunset or an amazing landscape, during such occasions you could easily die of astonishment!

Meditation and mindfulness practices remove a lot of the negative mental clutter from our head and make a space for creating a more positive mindset. 

Being a firm believer in the benefits of the practices as a conduit for better mental health I wanted to share my knowledge and experience with people in my local community. In 2013 i set up a community interest company called Bekindtoyourmind CIC. The company targeted people at the low end of the wage spectrum and offered them a low cost/means tested series of classes, groups and workshops that would help them develop some resilience from negative states of mind. The business and demand for the classes flourished but sadly, in 2015, urgent family matters needed my attention and I was forced to close the business.

It was with a heavy  heart that I reluctantly closed Bekindtoyourmind CIC. I had found my forte in life and the desire to start the business again has never left my heart

In 2019 I started up Selflovefirst CIC. Selflovefirst might be seen as in evolution from Bekindtoyourmind CIC. The core elements of meditation, mindfulness and compassion based practices are still there but we have now adopted the well studied therapeutic values of nature into our practices. Nature is a natural healer and an antidote to the stresses of the modern, technological age that we currently live in. We believe that by adopting natural surroundings into our practice we give ourselves up to a deeper, more transformational experience that resets and nurtures our being.
